Tour

Carrara Marble Quarries

Duration: 6 h*

Leaving the sea behind and taking the road that from the centre of Carrara climbs up into the Apuan Alps, you are struck by the majesty of these mountains, dotted with nineteenth century bridges which used to form the route of the Marble railway, and with the famous caves of Polvaccio, where Michelangelo used to go himself in order to choose the blocks of marble for his works.

The tour continues with a visit to the marble quarry on an off-road 4x4, which takes us from 420m above sea level, to 900m, taking the steep quarry tracks used for transporting marble, from which there is a view of the many important quarries of the Canal Grande marble field that are still used today.

On the road, with its splendid views, there are many traditional lard makers. We will stop in one of them to taste the famous seasoned lard of Colonnata. There will also be an opportunity to taste some, as well as some locally produced salami.
